SERIES INFO: The Charlotte Knights took the opening game of the series on Thursday by ascore of 3-2 backed by Dylan Axlerod’s complete game. Axelrod improved to 4-1 on the seasonwith a 1.20 ERA – the top mark in the IL. On Friday, in game two of the series, the Knights won for the second-straight day over Lehigh Valley, this time by a whopping 11-3 margin. On Saturday, the Knights beat the ‘Pigs for the third-straight day and won by a score of 3-2. The Knights are now 3-0 against Lehigh Valley at home. Earlier thisseason, the Knights played the IronPigs in Lehigh Valley and dropped two of three with another game suspended due to inclement weather. That game was resumed and completed on Thursday 5/24 in Fort Mill and the IronPigs won 5-4 – giving the ‘Pigs a 3-1 series win at home this season against Charlotte.
Danks You Very Much: Jordan Danks had a solid all-around game Saturday night. He made a diving catch in the third inning to save two runs, had an RBI-single in the fourth to drive home the Knights’ first run, and hit a long home run in the sixth as well. He now has an eight-game hitting streak, 10 multi-hit games, and has a hit in 10 of his last 11 games.
Gaining Ground: Charlotte is now 1.5 games back in the Wild Card race behind Lehigh Valley and the Buffalo Bisons, who they split four games with on their last homestand. Gwinnett still leads the Knights in the IL South by 2.5 games.
Going Streaking: Saturday night’s win was the Knights’ fourth in a row, which ties their season-high winning streak. With a win today, the Knights will have their first five-game winning streak since August 29-September 2 of 2011. The five-game win-streak was against Norfolk (8/29-8/30), Durham (8/31-9/1), and Gwinnett (9/2).
Saturday Knights Are Alright: With last night’s win, Charlotte improved to 8-2 this season on Saturday nights, their best night of the week. Their second best day of the week has only four wins (Wed, Thurs. and Fri.)
Deuces Wild for Double-Deuce: #22 Matt Zaleski had a line of twos in the box score Saturday night. He gave up two runs, both earned, walked two, and struck out two for his second
win of the season. He also picked off two runners at first base in the same inning in the 2nd
Bru-Crew: Brian Bruney pitched another 1-2-3 ninth for the Knights Saturday night to pick up his eighth save of the season. He struck out one in his seventh straight scoreless appearance and lowered his ERA to1.31.
Walk this Way: Dan Johnson walked two more times on Saturday night to raise his league-leading total to 45 on the year. He has four walks in the first three games of the homestand.
Who’s Hot: Ray Olmedo is hitting .500 (8-16) with three runs scored and three RBIs over his last five games. Tyler Kuhn is hitting .429 (6-14) with three runs scored and one RBI over his last four games. Starters Terry Doyle, Dylan Axelrod and Charlie Shirek have each won two-straight starts.
