Going for Two Straight vs. G-Braves…
2011 & 2012 SERIES INFO: Last season, the Knights led the series against the Braves 6-5 at Knights Stadium. In all, however, the Braves won the 2011 overall series against the Knights 13-8. The Knights took the 2012 series lead with a pounding of the G-Braves on Friday. Dan Johnson launched two home runs, Hector Gimenez added his 6th of the season, and Charlotte beat Gwinnett 10-3 in the opening game of their quick two-game series from Coolray Field. The win for the Knights was the fifth of the season against Gwinnett and pushed them to a 5-4 mark against their South Division foe. With the win, the Knights pulled to 1.5 games behind Gwinnett in the South Division and just 0.5 back in the Wild Card.
Coolray Field: Charlotte went 6-5 at Coolray Field in 2009 – the first season for Gwinnett. The Knights matched that total a year later and went 6-5 again at Coolray. Last season, however, the Knights went just 2-8 in Lawrenceville. This season, the Knights are 3-3 in Georgia after Friday’s win.
More, More, Morel: Chicago White Sox third baseman Brent Morel continued his rehab from a lumbar back strain on Friday night with Charlotte. He added another hit and now has five hits over his three-game rehab stint. He was 2-5 with a run scored and a nice diving stab and throw at third base on Thursday night. Morel went 4-8 with three runs scored and a double at Knights Stadium (5/30-31).
Danks for the Hits: Jordan Danks continued his torrid pace. The Gold Glove centerfielder was 3-5 with a double and a run scored — extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Danks went 10-23 (.435) with five runs scored, six walks, and seven RBI on the last homestand.
Ray of Sunshine: Ray Olmedo extended his hit-streak to 12 games on Friday night – finishing with a 2-4 performance with two runs scored and two RBIs. He went 10-21 on the last homestand with five runs scored.
Two Timing Dan Johnson two home runs on Friday – the second time this season he has accomplished that feat. His teammate Jordan Danks had two home runs on 5/9/12 vs. TOL. Johnson last hit two home runs on 4/28/12 @ SYR. Before that, his last two-home run game was on 9/15/10, when he hit two bombs for the Tampa Bay Rays against the New York Yankees. Both of those home runs came off of Phil Hughes.
Knightly IL Leader Board: (Pitchers) RHP Dylan Axelrod is third in the IL with a 2.36 ERA. Last night’s starter LHP Charlie Leesman is now sixth in the IL in ERA (2.50). RHP Charlie Shirek is fourth in the IL in IP (66.0).
Knightly IL Leader Board: (Hitters) Jordan Danks has a 14-game hit-streak and has upped his batting average to .302 on the season – which is good for ninth in the IL. Danks is also tied for fourth in OBP (.417) and is fourth in walks with 37. Dan Johnson is first in the IL in games (55), third in HR (13), second in RBI (44), first in OBP (.449), tied for fourth in slugging % (.574), fourth in total bases (105), and first in walks (49). Greg Golson is second in triples (5), third in runs scored (36), third in hits (60) and first in at-bats (215).
Jhanny Be Good: Jhan Carlos Marinez tossed a scoreless inning on Friday and has not allowed a run in his last four games (6.0 IP). Lefties are now hitting just .139 and righties are hitting just .106 against him this season. When he gets ahead in the count, batters are hitting a miniscule .038 (1-26) against. He’s fanned 27 batters over 24 innings pitched this season and entered the 2012 season ranked as the fifth-best prospect in the White Sox system by Baseball America.
