1st Place Showdown Tonight!
Last Night’s Result: The Louisville Bats slugged three home runs and received a solid pitching performance from Chad Reineke en route to a 4-2 win over the Charlotte Knights in the finale of their four-game series on Sunday. Sunday’s loss was Charlotte’s second straight. Mike Costanzo, Denis Phipps, and Cody Puckett hit solo home runs for Louisville in the victory. Puckett’s seventh inning home run off of Charlotte reliever Daniel Moskos (2-3, 3.70) broke a 2-2 tie. It proved to be the game-winner.
As the Roster Turns: RHP Dylan Axelrod, who will start tonight’s game, was activated off the DL today. To make room for Axelrod, reliever Daniel Moskos (MOSS-KISS) was placed on the Temporary Inactive List. Also, Brandon Short, who began the season on Charlotte’s DL, was activated and assigned to Winston-Salem (A). Short did not play for the Knights this season.
Gotta Split: The Knights fell to Louisville 4-2 Sunday to split the series 2-2. It is their 15th series split of the season and their 11th in a four-game series. Charlotte has not been swept in a series this year and has swept a series six times. They are 8-4-11 in four-game series. In 2011, these two teams split eight games. They will meet again four more times from August 14-17 at Knights Stadium.
Sunday Streak Stopped: Charlotte’s 4-2 loss to Louisville Sunday was their first loss on Sunday since July 1st at Gwinnett. They had won four straight on Sundays but did not make it quite back to .500 on that day of the week yet as they are now 8-10.
Multi-Hit King: Tyler Kuhn was 2-4 Sunday for his team-leading 35th multi-hit game of ’12.
Dan the Man: Dan Johnson was 2-for-3 Sunday with his International League-leading 86th walk and a run scored. He hit .333 with five runs scored, a walk, two home runs, and three RBI in the series. Johnson has a .316 batting average over his last five games. Sunday was his 23rd multi-hit game of the season. Johnson also leads the IL with 25 home runs.
He-Man: Hector Gimenez was 2-for-4 with a double Sunday for his 21st multi-hit game of the season.
Wise Guy: DeWayne Wise was 2-for-4 Sunday with an RBI for his first hits and run-driven-in as a member of the Knights.
Mitch Pitching In: Jared Mitchell has reached base in 10 of the 12 games he’s played in for the Knights this season. Mitchell is hitting .314 against righties while with Charlotte.
