(Game 2 of Best-of-Five)

WED: RHP Charlie Shirek (0-0, 15.43) (11-5, 3.65)
vs. RHP Zach Stewart (1-0, 7.20) (3-5, 3.94)

Game One Recap: Pawtucket starting pitcher Steven Wright (1-0) allowed just two runs over seven innings, Danny Valencia, Tony Thomas, and J.C. Linares all homered, and the Pawtucket Red Sox beat the Charlotte Knights 7-2 on Tuesday in game one of the Governors’ Cup Finals from McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, RI.

Roster Moves: LHP Charlie Leesman, who left last night’s game in the first inning after a collision with first baseman Seth Loman, was placed on the DL today. Leesman allowed back-to-back singles in the first and left with one out in the inning. RHP Andre Rienzo, the scheduled game two starter, relieved Leesman and allowed one run in the first. Leesman was charged with the run.

In the Nick of Time: RHP Nick McCully was promoted to Charlotte to take Leesman’s roster spot. McCully, a product of Coastal Carolina, was 4-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 24 games with Winston-Salem earlier this season. He was most recently with Double-A Birmingham and posted a 2-4 mark with a 4.75 ERA in 16 games (seven starts). His last seven appearances were as a starter and he posted a 1-3 mark with a 3.89 ERA as a starter.

One Day Early: RHP Andre Rienzo was expecting to start game two when he came to the ballpark on Tuesday, but instead came in to pitch game one. He allowed three runs on four hits over 5.2 innings and was saddled with the loss. It was just his second Triple-A appearance and so far he has fanned 17 batters over 12.1 IP.

Bouncing Back: After Charlotte lost 5-1 to the Red Sox on June 27 at Pawtucket, they won the next four games they played against them. They only have to win three to claim the Governors’ Cup Finals and the International League Championship.

First-timers: Tuesday night was the first time in the playoffs the Knights have lost on the road. They are 2-1 away from home. It was also the first game they have lost when scoring first. They are 3-1 when jumping out to an early lead.

Five for Phegley:Josh Phegley added two more hits on last night’s game one matchup and has now recorded a hit in all five of Charlotte’s playoff games. He’s currently hitting .444 with two home runs for the Knights so far in the playoffs.

Same Start as in 1999. The Charlotte Knights lost their last game one of the IL Finals as well. In 1999, the club lost 3-1 to the Durham Bulls. More on the 1999 season on page two.
